The Family Room

Our family room sits just off the kitchen.  The family room was the first room we intend to tackle as far as furnishing and decorating. The reasoning behind this is two-fold: (1) the family room and the kitchen are probably the two most used rooms in the house, so we want them to be comfortable places that we really enjoy being in; and (2) it was pink. Really, really pink. And the seller left us some fabulous curtains.

You might notice the art above the fireplace, which is a watercolor my aunt painted for us as a wedding gift.  We’re drawing the room’s color scheme from the painting.  We’re going with a subtle green tone on the walls.  It’s Glidden’s Sea Drops, with Iced Cilantro on the ceiling (all paint colors in this room are Glidden).  All of the trim will remain white, including the baseboards and window sills.  We’re also keeping the white blinds (but not the lovely, lovely curtains).  We also plan to install white crown molding.  This room is where we relax, so we chose harmonious accent colors like soft gold (Boston Cream (not shown), Triple Crown) and teal blue (Forest Glen, Club Monaco).  Finally, we’ll add a strong burgundy accent color (Scarlet’s Velvet) that will really pop and also tie in with the painting.  One of our wedding colors was burgundy, and my aunt incorporated that into  the painting.

As far as furnishings go, we’ve chosen a few pieces for the room.  Starting with the floor, we found this great area rugon sale at JC Penney.  It incorporates some different values of the teal tone, as well as chocolate brown, which should go great with the coffee table, end tables, and entertainment center .  The lighter tan in the carpet will also go great with our couch and armchair.  We scored a used PB Basic couch and ottoman and a PB Grand Basic armchair on craigslist, and ordered new slipcovers for them in a herringbone wheat twill fabric.

We found this great occassional chair at Overstock.com.  It’s surprisingly comfy and incorporates a pale teal as well as some gold tones in the embroidry.  We’ll toss in some throw pillows from Crate & Barrel in our accent tones of dark teal and burgundy, as well as a gold throw blanket.  The lamp, also from Crate & Barrel, will shed some light on things, with a pale teal base and a matte gold shade.  Finally, white curtains will frame the windows, making the room feel a little bit softer but still allowing plenty of light in through the windows.

Here is the family room as it is now.  Not quite polished yet, but certainly an improvement. We recently got a new tv stand and audio tower, largely because we wanted the use of our coffee table/make-shift tv stand back.
